Healthy Living: The Benefits of Walking at Work

Most office jobs keep people glued to their seats for hours on end. Often unavoidable, this necessity to work while sitting is the foundation of many sedentary lifestyles. Not only does sitting for extended periods of time have a negative impact on the body, it can also muddle up the mind. As more scientific evidence comes out revealing how damaging the sedentary lifestyle can be, more office workers are fixing the issue by adding a bit more walking to their daily routine. Learn more about how walking at work can help improve your health.

Healthy Living: The Benefits of Walking at Work

Walking Helps Strengthen the Body

It’s obvious that exercising more improves health, but one of the reasons why most people don’t start adding a walk to their work schedule is because they have a hard time believing that walking for 15 or 30 minutes a day can produce any major results. While walking won’t burn as much fat or as many calories as running, it will burn calories, boost the metabolism and maintain the body’s muscle. Walking also helps build stronger bones and reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

It’s Good to Get Away from the Chair

Sitting down for extended periods of time, day after day, week after week, isn’t exactly what our bodies were meant to do. A huge part of the reason why sitting is so bad for the body is because it typically goes hand in hand with bad posture, decreased blood flow (particularly to the legs), unnecessary strain on the lungs and spine–and therefore a decrease in the amount of oxygen distributed evenly around the body. These things aren’t taking place as soon as we sit down. They build up over time–and can be prevented with a daily walk.

Walking Also Improves Your Mood

In addition to staving off larger health problems and preventing muscle loss, daily walking routines can also help improve mental health. All those things that benefit the body also benefit the mind, while simple things like a change of scenery, socializing with walking buddies or just getting out into fresh air can have a direct and immediate impact on improving how we feel during the day. A lot of it has to do with blood flow. Getting up and walking gets blood and oxygen flowing to the brain, improving focus while decreasing stress levels.

And Optimizes Your Other Workouts

Walking at work has the highest benefit for people who try to remain active outside of work. Many people try to compensate for sedentary lifestyles by hitting the gym on a regular basis. However, exercising outside of work to make up for hours upon hours of sitting in one place might not be enough. Simply put, sitting all day at work might cause more damage than high-intensity workouts at the gym can make up for. On the positive side, walking a few minutes every hour, or for 15 to 30 minutes at lunch, can make exercise outside of work even more effective. Whatever walking option you choose, remember to drink more water during the day.

10 Easy Ways to Warm Up Your Bathroom this Winter

In the winter, those tile floors and cold surfaces can make us dread getting out of bed in the morning. It’s not the most comforting room in the house during the colder months of the year, but with a few easy updates the bathroom can become a warm, relaxing place. Warm up your bathroom this winter with these simple ideas.

10 Easy Ways to Warm Up Your Bathroom for Winter

1. Bath Mats

Eliminate cold feet from your daily bathroom routine with a plush bath mat or runner. Almost every bathroom has one already, but these mats might be worn down from ordinary wear and tear. Adding a brand new bath mat is the most affordable way to make a big impact on the warmth and comfort of your bathroom this winter.

2. Warm Colors

If you live in a cold-weather climate, you’ve probably taken the age-old advice to stick with the most neutral color palette that will satisfy your decor all year ’round. But that slate of neutral colors isn’t as limited as you might imagine. Check out this list of warm neutral paint colors if you’re ready to apply a fresh coat of paint.

3. Plush Towels

Aside from bath mats, the quality of your bath towels, washcloths and bath mitts has the biggest impact on how warm your bathroom feels. The hotter the water, the colder it is stepping out of the shower or bathtub. Like bath mats, all towels eventually wear thin from everyday wear, so swap yours for some fresh options.

4. Wood Accents

If you’re not in the mood to update your bathroom with a warm neutral paint color, another quick option is to increase the amount of wood accents in your small bathroom space. Lighter woods like pine, hemlock and birch can give your bathroom a sharp, clean look, while red oak, cherry and mahogany add instant warmth.

5. Coastal Curtains

After the holiday decorations are taken down, there’s usually a long winter lull between the start of the New Year and the first signs of spring. Instead of waiting around for the snow to melt, go ahead and update your bathroom with your favorite spring or summer decor. Or–why not–just keep your bath coastal all year long.

6. Different Bulbs

Changing your white light bulbs out for a warmer tone will automatically make your bathroom feel warmer in the winter. Warm white light bulbs trending toward the warm orange-like glow you prefer will be lower on the temperature scale (2500K-3000K), while changing the shape of your bulb can create a warm effect as well.

7. Country Appeal

Of all the decorating styles, country is typically more effective at creating that warm, cozy feeling your winter bathroom requires. It doesn’t have to be a complete makeover. Adding a few unique country accents makes any room feel a bit more comforting. If you’re more modern, rustic or vintage accents create a similar effect.

8. Window Fixes

If you have a window in your bathroom, the temperature could fluctuate pretty drastically. It’s a good idea to check that your window is caulked, sealed and free of air leaks. Even the smallest crack can filter in cold air and cool down the small area of the bathroom pretty quickly, and eventually spread to the rest of your home.

9. Warm Glow

Whether you change the bulbs in your bathroom to a warmer tone or not, you can either accent those lights or create a similar effect with the warm glow of candlelight. It also gives you a chance to combine that warm country style, start decorating for the spring season early or add an attractive scent with fragrance warmers.

10. Fresh & Clean

Sometimes the warm feeling in your bathroom has nothing to do with the actual temperature. Similar to light and paint color, the cleanliness of your bathroom can play a major role in determining the overall comfort of the space. Dirty spaces make us feel uncomfortable, so cleanliness is as important as temperature in winter.

Love Your Clothes: Tips to Take Care of Your Spring Wardrobe

We’re not even halfway through winter, but most of us are already dreaming of spring. Sometimes it helps to get ahead on our spring planning. Winter organizing and home improvement projects are great for keeping our minds occupied and helping us get our home’s in shape for the warmer months, but it’s a lot more fun to start assembling spring wardrobes, and equally important to make sure we’re taking good care of these new additions. Get a few tips to take better care of your spring wardrobe and explore new LTD apparel additions.

Love Your Clothes: Tips to Take Better Care of Your Spring Wardrobe

Create An Efficient Closet

When we think of extending the life of our clothes, we rarely consider the place where they spend the most time–the closet. Whether on hangers, in drawers or atop shelves, the way we store our clothes can have a major impact on their longevity. Make sure every article of clothing is hanging on the proper type of hanger, that drawers and shelves are clean, fresh and free of dust, and that the closet itself has access to fresh air.

Rethink Your Laundry Room

Aside from the closet, the laundry room is where your clothes spend most of their time. It’s easy to forget the basics or cut corners when we’re washing, drying, folding and ironing our clothes, especially if we’re doing the job for the entire family. If you haven’t in awhile, consider updating everyday items like hampers or totes, laundry bags or old ironing boards, and never forget to thoroughly clean your washer and dryer regularly.

Invest In Quality Clothes

No clothes will last forever, and the lives of most clothes can be extended if we care for them properly, but the entire process is so much easier if we invest in quality clothes the first time. It’s better to splurge on the elegant dress you’ve had your eye on that will last several years rather than having to update every year. However, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have quality clothes, like these new spring looks from LTD.

Style for Every Season

It takes some time to build our wardrobes. For many years, those of us aspiring to do so have to get by with what we have, exposing our favorite outfits to more wear and tear over time. Even though it can be hard to tell, there is a difference between having too many clothes and having the right amount of clothes for each season. Build your spring wardrobe this season, and look forward to warm weather with summery options.

Top 5 Modern Romance Novels Adapted Into Movies

Novels have been fueling the movie industry since the very beginning. In fact, so many movies are based on books that sometimes we don’t even realize our favorite movies wouldn’t exist without them. In the romance genre, it can be easy to spot the obvious adaptations. Movies like Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility are forever linked to the classic works of literature that preceded them. But it’s a bit more difficult to determine whether some of our more recent favorites can be found on bookshelves as well. Take a look at these five modern romance novels that have been adapted into movies you might recognize.

10 Best Romance Novels That Also Made Great Movies

The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

Matthew Quick’s novel is about the unexpected romance between Pat, just trying to get his life back on track after separating with his wife and spending time in a mental health facility, and Tiffany, an “odd” woman also on the mend after suffering through the recent death of her husband. The heartwarming story was made into a movie starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in 2012, for which Lawrence won her first Oscar.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

With the Great Depression as its backdrop and a second-rate American circus as the traveling setting, Sara Gruen unveils the tale of Jacob Jankowski, an aspiring veterinarian who drops out of college, joins the show and is charged with caring for an elephant that must be trained to save the future of the circus. In the process Jacob falls in love with Marlena, the wife of the villainous ringmaster. The bestselling book was adapted into a movie that was released in 2011 starring Robert Pattinson as Jacob and Reese Witherspoon as Marlena.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes adapted her own bestselling novel into one of the most successful romantic movies of the past year. The story follows Louisa (Emilia Clarke), who accepts a caretaking position for the recently paralyzed Will, who is having trouble adjusting to the limitations of his physical condition. At times uplifting and just as often heartbreaking, Moyes is one of the few authors able to successfully translate their novel to the screen.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

It might be one of the most popular romance movies of all time, but not everyone knows that the famous film was an all-time bestseller nearly ten years earlier. The film, which starred Ryan Gosling in his breakout role as Noah and Rachel McAdams as Allie, was one of the first in a line of successful adaptations from romance author, Nicholas Sparks, the more recent titles being Safe Haven (2013) and The Longest Ride (2015).

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Audrey Niffenegger’s debut novel introduced an entirely new twist on the well-versed subject of time travel. The love story follows a man named Henry who suffers from an extremely rare genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily travel back and forth through time. His marriage to Clare is routinely complicated by his condition. It was adapted into a movie of the same name in 2009 starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.

How to Make NFL Bingo Cards for the Big Game

The NFL playoffs are still in the early rounds, but the biggest game takes place on February 5th. If you plan on throwing a party for the NFL finale, you’re probably wondering how to keep everyone engaged. After all, not everyone who shows up will actually be interested in what’s happening on the field. And only two teams can play, so the chances your home team will be competing is slim. The game isn’t the only reason people tune in. Some people look forward to the halftime show. Plus, it’s the only televised event in the whole year where people look forward to the commercials. You can make watching those countless commercials even more entertaining by creating NFL bingo cards for everyone at the party. Get to know the basics right here.

How to Make NFL Bingo Cards for the Big Game

Find the Advertisers

The first step for creating NFL bingo cards is to find as many advertisers as possible that are guaranteed to air advertisements during the game. Some of the biggest advertisers are always going to be there, but there are also some wild cards, and there are always a few new companies who have the money and creativity to live up to the game’s high commercial expectations. Here’s the current list of advertisers airing ads so far.

Keep Things Simple

You don’t have to put down a specific company to create great NFL bingo cards. You can also create cards with certain slots based on educated guesses, or keep things simple, such as: “Luxury Car Commercial” or “Beer Commercial“. You could also add fun guesses like big celebrities you think will make an appearance.

Random Assortment

Once you have all your categories figured out, the final step is to make each card unique. You don’t want a few of the same people winning for the exact same list. One good solution is to cut out all your squares that you’ll use on every board (usually 25 squares with a free square in the middle), then mix them up in a bowl and pick them out at random. This will essentially guarantee that every card will have an original design.

Add Your Own Twists

You can also get creative when creating each card, adding squares for a variety of different things to keep everyone entertained throughout the night. If you’re playing additional games, you can reserve squares for the winners of these games, or reserve some free squares for people who guess the right score at halftime.

Don’t forget to stock up on prizes for the winner of your commercial bingo contest. Here are a few ideas:

Not everyone will be excited to watch the actual game, but many people will be looking forward to the funny commercials. Get ready for the big game with NFL gear and entertaining essentials at LTD Commodities.

Winter Cleanup: Digital To-Do List to Start the Year Fresh

We’re less than a week into the New Year, which means most of us haven’t yet given up on our resolutions. It’s the perfect time of year to pack things up and get organized for the winter months. Nothing really makes us feel more refreshed than a thorough home cleaning after the holiday season, but few of us remember to do the same with our devices. Computers, smartphones, and tablets can get pretty cluttered throughout the year. Given how much we use our devices on a daily basis, that clutter can cause some major headaches. Start the year off right and finish off your winter cleanup with a few reminders on this 2017 digital to-do list.

Winter Cleanup: Digital To-Do List for 2017

Purge Your Inbox

Even those of us with the most organized email accounts get cluttered from time to time. Allowing it to build up is only going to stress us out, so it’s important once every few months to delete anything we don’t need, update our folders and sort all of our old messages. Not only will it make finding information a lot easier on our email platforms, it will free up a ton of space and give us a chance to unsubscribe to annoying emails.

Contact List Cleanup

Our email accounts can get pretty cluttered, but even though we may go a few months without cleaning up our inboxes, eventually we get the job done. The same can’t always be said for our contact lists. Wherever you keep your contact lists, whether it’s in your email account, on your laptop, in your cell phone or synced up across all your devices, it’s a healthy idea to go through and delete all that information you don’t need.

Delete Unused Apps

With so many free apps available across all our devices, it’s pretty easy to build up a collection we just don’t use. If you haven’t checked how much space all your apps are taking up or how much data they’re eating up with unchecked notifications, you’ll be amazed at how many apps you downloaded during the year that you don’t need, happy with how much space you’ve cleared out and pleased to decrease your overall data use.

Winter Cleanup: Digital To-Do List for 2017

Change Passwords

Regularly changing your passwords is a crucial step that helps protect all that sensitive information you’ve built into your devices over the years. But if you’re going to change passwords on websites you frequently use, you’ll want to spend some time developing strong passwords. If you just go through the motions, you’ll likely be swapping out strong passwords for weaker ones, which is the opposite of what you intended to do.

Backup Files

We all know how important it is to back up files from our devices. But transferring information to an external hard drive has more benefits than making sure you don’t lose precious documents, images or videos. It also frees up a lot of space on all your devices. Many of us are hesitant to delete files, which leads to us keeping too much on our devices. If unsure, backup the files–it will give you more time to decide, and free up space.
