Mittens Here’s a favorite for LTD — because we’re in Chicago, our winters are brutal and there are never enough mittens or gloves to keep up with the cold weather. The Renegade Seamstress gives stitch-by-stitch instructions on making super-snug mittens out of that favorite sweater you don’t want to let go of… but have to give up. Armed with this pattern, you will never run out of mittens!

The trick to what makes this idea so fashionable is that it’s felted. That means, if you want to make this exact bag, the sweater you use has to be made of 100% wool (this one is alpaca wool).
Sweethearts Of course your upcycled sweaters don’t necessarily have to be wearable. Jess from If Only They Would Nap made her old sweaters into adorable felted hearts. She hangs them from a branch, but there are other ways you can use them: wedding shower or party favors, stocking or Easter basket stuffers, bunting for Valentine’s Day, or everyday decor.
Slippers Here’s another idea to get started on for next winter: slippers! Kat at We Can Re-Do It put together an easy, step-by-step tutorial magically transform a striped sweater into adorable striped slippers. A locker is a student’s room away from home. It is a small bit of personal space you visit throughout the day, and it is a prime place for you to show off your own style. Personal expression aside, a decorated locker is easier to keep organized to keep you on track so you make it to class on time. Here are 4 fun ways to decorate a locker:
Clean It The first step is to start with a clean locker. Then, check on the school’s locker policy before purchasing accessories. Some allow students to do everything up to painting lockers, while others permit little to no personalization. If your school has a policy, it should be in the student handbook or just ask an administrator.
Light It Up While the school’s hallways are well-lit, the lockers in those hallways can be dark caves. Put some light in there and it will be easier to find the right books and supplies in a hurry. Battery operated LED candles can go almost anywhere and they”re designed for energy efficiency. For extra bling, use string lights to dazzle your locker. You can even coordinate the light with a curtain that hangs over the locker opening.
Magnetic Personality The metal walls and doors of lockers practically beg to be covered with refrigerator magnets. Funny ones or inspirational ones, they can hold up personal pictures, to-do lists or best online casino reminders to help you get you through the day.
Artwork and Photos The quickest way to personalize a locker is to fill it with pictures. Print and hang up single Instagram photos of friends, or create a big collage. Tuck in some magazine clippings, artwork, postcards, and mini posters. Don’t forget to save space for your own creations, too. Sports and trading cards are a cool touch, as well.
Organizers, Mirrors and Magnets A mirror on the inside of the locker door will give you a place to primp in between classes and list pads and small wall bins help with organization. Bins provide catch-all storage for pens, pads, art supplies, and more.Nothing is too heavy to put on a locker door; keep everything secured with inspirational magnets or double-sided foam tape. Add shelves to multiply the space for books, but they can also be a good place to hold your gym bag.
However you decide to decorate your space, remember the decor is a reflection of you. Make it personal and it will be a welcome picture during your breaks between classes.
Scarfs aren’t just to keep us warm these days. They can add a lot to an outfit and can be worn in many different ways. With tons of materials, patterns, and colors to choose from, scarf wearing is now a year-round trend! Here are seven ways to get the most out of your new scarf.
1) Infinity Knot
This one is perfect for both warm scarves and also various long fashion scarves. Begin with the scarf folded in half and place it around your neck. Put one arm of the scarf through the loop, then twist the loop a couple of times to the left, the end of the scarf should be hanging down. Put the other scarf through the top of the loop and let it hang, and you?re done! Once you master this scarf knot, you?ll be happy to use it for just about any long scarf.
2) Scarf Bow?
Place the scarf behind your neck and check that both sides are even, and then simply tie it the same way you learned to tie your shoes, or any bow! It will be loose and a little floppy, depending on how soft or stiff your scarf is.
3) Layered Knot
This is perfect for a lightweight fashion scarf, as it is high on your neck. Put the scarf around your throat so the ends hang in back. Wrap the ends around to the front and loosen the front section. Tie the ends in a loose knot, and cover with the section around your neck.
4) Belt Accessory
You can brighten up your boring brown or black belt with a twist of color by wrapping your scarf around the belt after you put it on. Secure the belt into place, then wrap the scarf as loosely or tightly around the belt as you like. Leave the ends long, continue wrapping, or tie them together in a bow.
There?s really not much difference between a fashion scarf and a loose headband, so spruce up your ?do with this elegant style. This look is good for ladies with lots of hair, especially on bad hair days. Bunch up your hair in a messy bun and wrap a colorful scarf around the base, where the bun meets your scalp. Tuck it into your hair tie or bobby pins as much and as tightly as you like, or tuck it a little and pull the edges loose for a messy look.
6) Fake Tie Knot
The fake tie knot is a really unique way to wear a scarf. It looks almost like a tie, but it?s not. It?s a scarf. Tie a loop at one end of your scarf, but leave it kind of loose. Run the other end of the scarf around your neck and through the loop and tighten!
7) Knotted Shawl
This is another great way to wear a scarf as a something other than a scarf! This shawl style works best for large scarves and pashminas, as it will be wrapped around your arms. Put the scarf around your shoulders just like a shawl, then wrap the ends below your arms and tie a knot behind your back. Pull the knot up high and the loose outside down low and you?ve got yourself a shawl!

Colored gemstones are more than just pretty to look at. Some people have even assigned meanings and characteristics. If you believe in that sort of thing, you may want to check out your jewelry box and see what each piece says about you. Look at your most favorite gemstones. Does it surprise you that they match your personality so well? Or is it the exact opposite? Take a look at the meanings behind the most popular stones on the market and see how they relate to you.
It’s most common appearance is of the colorless kind, yet can also be found sporting hues of pink, green, blue, brown, and even black. Once believed to be ‘splinters of stars fallen to earth from the heavens’ by the ancient Greeks, the diamond symbolizes love, beauty, and purity. It is thought to bring clarity of thought and has been used in intellectual pursuits as well as meditation.
These gems are beautiful green stones that are just as at home in a silver or platinum setting as they are in gold. It has been said it was the sacred stone favored by the goddess Venus and is associated with female fertility. Some say emeralds actually promote psychic insight and can help with memory and focus.
You might not realize that they are more than just blue stones. They also come in pink, green, and colorless varieties. Popular among those of the royal bloodline, they are associated with calmness, truthfulness, and devotion. They were called ‘celestial gems’ by the ancients due to the varying colors matching the sky at any given time during the day from sunrise to sunset.
Pearls have often been associated with the moon thanks to their moon-like appearance. They come in a variety of colors and each has its own characteristic. White pearls, not surprisingly, give an air of purity and innocence while gold pearls are associated with prosperity and wealth, much like the precious metal gold.
These gems are a stunning neon or olive green stone that has been favored by many over the years. There are those that think some of Cleopatra’s emeralds were actually peridot. Napoleon even gave his mistress, Josephine, one as a token of his love and devotion. They are thought to help with sleep, strength, and positive attitude.
This stone has been called the ‘Hero’s Gemstone’ as it is thought to provide the wearers with courage and help them to overcome difficulties. Athletes in Greece and Rome wore them as they thought they would help increase their endurance.
So, now that you’ve seen a little insight into the meanings and characteristics of some of the more popular gemstones, do they coincide with any of your own principles or personality? If not, it really doesn’t matter. If you truly love the stones you’ve chosen, just assign your own meaning to them and continue to wear them with pride. Just check out this online jewelry store and find a piece that speaks to you.
It’s bad enough winter brings in super cold temperatures, but the cold wind can do a number on your skin. We’ve got a few tips up our sleeve to help you battle the cold air this winter.
1) Upgrade Your Face Masks & Lip Balm
Super windy conditions in places like Chicago cause a lot of cracked lips and dry faces. Rather than hoping your normal moisturizers and creams will protect you, supplement them with rejuvenating facemasks to replenish your skin?s moisture barrier. Look for those that contain healthy-skin ingredients like honey, rose hip oil, beeswax and purified bee venom, and Shea and cocoa butters.
Tip: Skip the face toner and harsh face wash and use a gentle cleanser instead.
When it comes to your lips, you might want to skip the lipstick altogether, because it has a tendency to dry out those beautiful puckers of yours. Instead, go for standard jellies like Vaseline and Carmex, or tinted and flavored balms that use essential oils. The oils will nourish and moisturize to avoid cracked lips, to leave them feeling firm and soft.
2) Rich Body Cream
Although you might not have many inches of arms and legs exposed while outdoors, the cold winter air can still do a number on your skin. Invest in a high-quality concentrated body cream with Shea butter, honey, oatmeal, almond butter and natural oils. The best way to get more moisture into your dry skin is to lather it up with natural balms and products, and let the lotion sit on your skin to soak in, so only rub it in about 80-90%. Many chemicals in beauty products have the opposite effect ? they end up drying out your skin, or leaving a greasy film.
Tip: Skip the shower gel during winter if it contains alcohol, and opt for Maternity skin care brands with coconut milk and other creams.
If your hands and feet are really feeling the effects of the cold winter air, lather them up with either a gentle aloe lotion or an all-natural body cream, and then wear socks and gloves for 30-60 minutes or overnight to let the moisture really set in.
3) Bundle Up ? Beauty Before Fashion
Sure, that awesomely warm pea coat looks fantastic, but is it protecting your skin from the cold? Look for winter jackets and snow-coat shells that are specifically meant to block the wind. We recommend layering an outer shell from a ski jacket over your fashionable coat to keep out the wind and protect your skin, then just remove the outer shell and tuck it away when you get to your destination.
Tip: Buy a size-too-big windbreaker or raincoat to wear over your winter coat to make sure the wind stays out. You might feel excessively bundled, but your skin will thank you!
When you bundle up to head out the door, make sure you remember to take care of your neck, chest, hands, and head! Scarves can really help protect the majority of your face if you walk to public transportation, or you can always go for the ninja look with a high-end facemask. Hats are a great (and fashionable) way to keep your hair and scalp from drying out completely in the wind.
