March is coming to an end, which means spring is in full swing — and you can tell by what our Pinterest followers are pinning! With snow still on the ground, we’re getting plenty of extra time to finish up our spring cleaning and get our gardens in order — both themes dominated our pins this month! Here are March’s Pinteresting Picks.
The first day of school is just around the corner. It’s a stressful time of year, but, luckily, August 15th is Relaxation Day and we’re using it as a reminder to loosen up before everything turns topsy-turvy with the new school year. Here are 5 ways to relax before school starts.
Take Time for Your Pet Having a dog or cat around to bond with has shown to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. In fact, at some university campuses, they’ve employed therapy dogs for students to visit when school becomes too stressful. At Harvard Medical School, you can even “check out” a dog just like you check out a book. If it works at Harvard, it may just work for you.
Exercise A good workout may not sound appealing, but aerobic exercise can actually help you relax. It lowers stress hormone levels and releases endorphins – the feel-good chemical. In addition to releasing endorphins, according to a study from Princeton University, exercise re-organizes the brain to shield it from stress. Take 30 minutes to jog down the street and you’re on your way to relaxation.
Touch There aren’t many people out there who would turn down a massage. In addition to feeling good physically, it can reduce anxiety, stress and aggression. Australian researchers examined the effects of daily massage on participants over seven weeks and tracked their anxiety and aggression levels. They found massage reduced stress and anxiety almost instantly. A daily massage may not be a reasonable activity, but the effects may warrant having a massage ball or neck massager handy at all times.
Play with Your Kids You only have a few weeks left to spend time with your kids, so playing with them is a no-brainer. What you might not know is studies show playing reduces stress. Researchers at Kansas State University found the more time mothers spent engaging with their children, the less overwhelmed they felt. You love being around them anyway, that they make you feel relaxed is an excellent bonus.
Eat There are all sorts of soothing foods you can eat to relax. At the top of that list is dark chocolate. It contains Tryptophan which is an essential amino acid that aids in the production of serotonin which can help your sleep and improve your mood. Tryptophan is found in a variety of foods – honey, spinach, cheese, eggs, duck, to name a few. When you’re planning your next meal, make it a relaxing one and be sure dark chocolate is for dessert.
Anytime is a good time to relax, but sometimes we have to make a point of working it into our schedules. Make Relaxation Day your notice to slow down before things hit hyper-speed on the first day of school.

Millions of people across the country are getting ready to lace up their sneakers to walk in support of breast cancer research and awareness. If you’re one of the millions gearing up for the Breast Cancer Walk, here are some ideas on how to prepare before you set out on your journey.
Before the Walk
Walking isn’t the most strenuous of exercises, but it’s still exercise and when you’re walking for miles, it takes training. The amount of time you spend on training depends on the distance your charity walk is. Generally, you’ll want to walk 30 minutes five days a week, increasing the walk time by five minutes each week. Use a 13-mile training schedule as a guide for your training. Walk rain or shine during your training because you never know what the weather will be on the day of the big walk.
Make sure you have shoes dedicated to walking. When you walk for exercise, you walk differently than you would doing errands or going to work and your shoes adapt to how you walk. This can reduce your risk of injury and blisters.
Walk with a training group for some of your walks. This can give you a chance to meet other people walking for your cause. Another way to stay motivated is by keeping a walking log or journal where you can track your progress.
As walk day approaches, start gathering information about what you’ll need on the day of the race. Generally, organizers send you a walk day packet or send you information on where to pick up your packet. The packet can include:
- Information on how to get to the start and when you should arrive
- Your number
- Safety pins for your number
Carry as little as possible. It takes a lot of energy to carry even small items. The longer you carry something, the heavier it feels and it uses energy you need to get across the finish line. Items you should carry:
- Water bottle
- Poncho or light rain jacket
- Protein bars
- First aid kit (small)
Wear moisture wicking clothes. Moisture wicking clothes draws moisture away from your body so your body can regulate its temperature based on the elements rather than moisture gathered on your body.
Drink before you get thirsty and eat before you get hungry. Eat about 100 calories each hour you’re walking. Staying hydrated and energized can keep you going and you’ll feel less exhausted toward the end.
Start slow. When the walk begins, the crowd can be big and hard to navigate. When the crowd thins out, start walking at a comfortable pace for you. Be aware and respectful of other walkers and volunteers. Walk only in designated areas.
After the Walk
Now that you’ve completed the big Breast Cancer Walk, you’ve got a great base for an exercise regimen. Keep it up and start thinking about your next charity walk. Do good things for a good cause and do good things for yourself.
We’re flipping through the catalog to pass the time between now and when the weekend starts. We’ve picked out some items we can’t wait to use now that the weather is finally warm! Here are LTD’s product picks for the week.
Don’t know what you want to do this St. Patrick’s Day yet? Don’t worry, we’ve started a March into Green board on Pinterest to help you in your journey. Here are some of our favorite finds.
It doesn’t quite feel like spring yet, but you can keep warm with the luck of the Irish in these green footed pajamas for adults. They’re exactly like the fleece jammies you had when you were a kid, complete with elasticized ankles and rubber grips on the bottom. From neck to toe in green, you won’t have to be the size of a leprechaun to feel like a leprechaun!
In the grand tradition of St. Patrick?s Day, adult beverages are on the menu of most celebrations. While some revelers might be celebrating with green beer, Irish stout or Irish whiskey, a welcome break from the typical drinks might lead you to something greener. The Shamrock Shooter and the Irish Frog are a sweeter treat than the typical drinks using green Midori as a base. If you?re ambitious, you can try to make the Irish Flag Shooter by layering cr?me de menthe, Baileys Irish Cream and Grand Marnier. However you decide to mix it, it?s sure to be a good time.
Your coffee doesn?t have to be Irish coffee to celebrate St. Patty?s Day. A green M&M mug will keep your Irish spirit awake as you take your coffee to go. The double wall will keep your beverage warm, and if you don?t have the luck of the Irish, the travel lid will work with you to keep you from spilling your drink.
If you’re celebrating with the underage Irish, a Shamrock Shake might be in order. This is a copycat recipe so you can make it at home. It’s not magic, but with a little green food coloring and peppermint extract, it might taste like a pot of gold.
If you have an out-of-town destination for St. Patrick?s Day, you can be bold and be green with quilted luggage. There’s no way this will get lost on the sea of black suitcases at the baggage claim. The lightweight design allows you to move freely as you travel while the interior pockets and full-zip closure makes room for everything you need and keeps them intact.
It ain?t easy being green, but snuggling up with this frog pillow might just make being green softer.? Not only is this green guy adorable, but he?s filled with thousands of micro-beads to make him soft and squishy. For kids, he’s a stuffed frog. For adults, he’s a travel pillow.
And, finally, it just wouldn’t be a holiday if we didn?t throw in a Keep Calm poster, so have a happy St. Patrick’s Day and shamrock on!
