10 Easy Ways to Warm Up Your Bathroom this Winter

In the winter, those tile floors and cold surfaces can make us dread getting out of bed in the morning. It’s not the most comforting room in the house during the colder months of the year, but with a few easy updates the bathroom can become a warm, relaxing place. Warm up your bathroom this winter with these simple ideas.

10 Easy Ways to Warm Up Your Bathroom for Winter

1. Bath Mats

Eliminate cold feet from your daily bathroom routine with a plush bath mat or runner. Almost every bathroom has one already, but these mats might be worn down from ordinary wear and tear. Adding a brand new bath mat is the most affordable way to make a big impact on the warmth and comfort of your bathroom this winter.

2. Warm Colors

If you live in a cold-weather climate, you’ve probably taken the age-old advice to stick with the most neutral color palette that will satisfy your decor all year ’round. But that slate of neutral colors isn’t as limited as you might imagine. Check out this list of warm neutral paint colors if you’re ready to apply a fresh coat of paint.

3. Plush Towels

Aside from bath mats, the quality of your bath towels, washcloths and bath mitts has the biggest impact on how warm your bathroom feels. The hotter the water, the colder it is stepping out of the shower or bathtub. Like bath mats, all towels eventually wear thin from everyday wear, so swap yours for some fresh options.

4. Wood Accents

If you’re not in the mood to update your bathroom with a warm neutral paint color, another quick option is to increase the amount of wood accents in your small bathroom space. Lighter woods like pine, hemlock and birch can give your bathroom a sharp, clean look, while red oak, cherry and mahogany add instant warmth.

5. Coastal Curtains

After the holiday decorations are taken down, there’s usually a long winter lull between the start of the New Year and the first signs of spring. Instead of waiting around for the snow to melt, go ahead and update your bathroom with your favorite spring or summer decor. Or–why not–just keep your bath coastal all year long.

6. Different Bulbs

Changing your white light bulbs out for a warmer tone will automatically make your bathroom feel warmer in the winter. Warm white light bulbs trending toward the warm orange-like glow you prefer will be lower on the temperature scale (2500K-3000K), while changing the shape of your bulb can create a warm effect as well.

7. Country Appeal

Of all the decorating styles, country is typically more effective at creating that warm, cozy feeling your winter bathroom requires. It doesn’t have to be a complete makeover. Adding a few unique country accents makes any room feel a bit more comforting. If you’re more modern, rustic or vintage accents create a similar effect.

8. Window Fixes

If you have a window in your bathroom, the temperature could fluctuate pretty drastically. It’s a good idea to check that your window is caulked, sealed and free of air leaks. Even the smallest crack can filter in cold air and cool down the small area of the bathroom pretty quickly, and eventually spread to the rest of your home.

9. Warm Glow

Whether you change the bulbs in your bathroom to a warmer tone or not, you can either accent those lights or create a similar effect with the warm glow of candlelight. It also gives you a chance to combine that warm country style, start decorating for the spring season early or add an attractive scent with fragrance warmers.

10. Fresh & Clean

Sometimes the warm feeling in your bathroom has nothing to do with the actual temperature. Similar to light and paint color, the cleanliness of your bathroom can play a major role in determining the overall comfort of the space. Dirty spaces make us feel uncomfortable, so cleanliness is as important as temperature in winter.

Winter Cleanup: Digital To-Do List to Start the Year Fresh

We’re less than a week into the New Year, which means most of us haven’t yet given up on our resolutions. It’s the perfect time of year to pack things up and get organized for the winter months. Nothing really makes us feel more refreshed than a thorough home cleaning after the holiday season, but few of us remember to do the same with our devices. Computers, smartphones, and tablets can get pretty cluttered throughout the year. Given how much we use our devices on a daily basis, that clutter can cause some major headaches. Start the year off right and finish off your winter cleanup with a few reminders on this 2017 digital to-do list.

Winter Cleanup: Digital To-Do List for 2017

Purge Your Inbox

Even those of us with the most organized email accounts get cluttered from time to time. Allowing it to build up is only going to stress us out, so it’s important once every few months to delete anything we don’t need, update our folders and sort all of our old messages. Not only will it make finding information a lot easier on our email platforms, it will free up a ton of space and give us a chance to unsubscribe to annoying emails.

Contact List Cleanup

Our email accounts can get pretty cluttered, but even though we may go a few months without cleaning up our inboxes, eventually we get the job done. The same can’t always be said for our contact lists. Wherever you keep your contact lists, whether it’s in your email account, on your laptop, in your cell phone or synced up across all your devices, it’s a healthy idea to go through and delete all that information you don’t need.

Delete Unused Apps

With so many free apps available across all our devices, it’s pretty easy to build up a collection we just don’t use. If you haven’t checked how much space all your apps are taking up or how much data they’re eating up with unchecked notifications, you’ll be amazed at how many apps you downloaded during the year that you don’t need, happy with how much space you’ve cleared out and pleased to decrease your overall data use.

Change Passwords

Regularly changing your passwords is a crucial step that helps protect all that sensitive information you’ve built into your devices over the years. But if you’re going to change passwords on websites you frequently use, you’ll want to spend some time developing strong passwords. If you just go through the motions, you’ll likely be swapping out strong passwords for weaker ones, which is the opposite of what you intended to do.

Backup Files

We all know how important it is to back up files from our devices. But transferring information to an external hard drive has more benefits than making sure you don’t lose precious documents, images or videos. It also frees up a lot of space on all your devices. Many of us are hesitant to delete files, which leads to us keeping too much on our devices. If unsure, backup the files–it will give you more time to decide, and free up space.

Refresh for the New Year: Tips for Staying Organized

Color reminder note with pin on cork board big idea 2016.

Now that the holidays are over and we’re not focused on entertaining and buying gifts, we can turn our attention to starting off the year organized. It’s never easy to do, but with winter weather keeping us inside, we can tick off a few tasks before spring arrives. Here are 6 tips for staying organized for the new year.

Act Now Beating out the habit of procrastination can put you on the fast track to organizing every facet of your life. This means completing tasks as they arise like doing dishes as you dirty them, putting away laundry as you fold it and putting the cap back on the toothpaste when you’re done with it. These are small tasks that are easy to tackle on their own, but when we let them pile up, it takes a lot more time and energy to get them all completed. We have the power of efficiency at our fingertips, we just have to use it.

ltd-storageCompartmentalize Everything in your home and office needs a spot of its own. Whether it’s gloves in a basket or files in a cabinet, find a place for everything you see scattered about your living and working spaces. When you have a place for things, it takes them out of site to declutter your space and mind. Though these things may not make sound disruptive, they can create mental noise that leads to stress. By putting them in their place, not only will you be more organized, you’ll also be more calm.

Use Your Computer It seems like a no-brainer, but using your computer can probably save you more time and energy than you’re letting it. Accept the electric company’s offer for paperless billing so your house doesn’t get cluttered with useless paper (and you have one less thing to shred!), use a password manager to save you time creating new ones and trying to remember old ones (and they increase your security!) and use calendar alerts for all the tasks you’ve been keeping track of in your head.

Create Procedures Most, if not all, of us have bedtime routines like washing our faces or brushing our teeth — these types of good habits can be applied to other parts of our lives to make us more organized and productive, we just have to isolate the activity and come up with a policy that makes sense to complete it. It can be anything from putting your shoes in the basket at the door to washing dishes as you dirty them. Starting good habits is tough, but once they become habits, you’ll discover the work is worth it.  multi-tasking

Once You Start, Don’t Stop When you set out to complete a task, finish it before you start a new one. There are a couple reasons for this one: 1) having several unfinished tasks creates mental and physical clutter — when you complete one task you can put away everything it requires to complete 2) not only does multitasking make us less efficient, but it also damages our brains. When you have a lot on your plate, break up your tasks into digestible pieces and work out one piece at a time.

Timing is Everything Audit your time both at work and at home. Figure out what periods you’re most productive and then do your most difficult and time-consuming tasks at those times. It saves you a lot of time and frustration in the long run and you’ll ultimately be more relaxed and organized.

6 Ideas for Upcycling Your Old Sweaters

Less than a month until spring and we’re ready for the new season — even if the cold weather isn’t ready to go quite yet. Spring cleaning is underway and the first things to go — as soon as the weather permits — is that big bag of sweaters. But before you decide to give send them off to the thrift store, consider getting a little more use out of them in another form. Here are 6 ideas for upcycling your old sweaters.

sweater-blanketBlanket While your sweaters may be taking up too much closet space, you can never have too many blankets! Right now is the perfect time to get started on projects to get ready for next winter. Seamstress Erin has an excellent, detailed tutorial on how you can spin your old sweaters into a new throw!

sweater-bootsLeg Warmers Here’s an easy-peasy way to make use of that sweater you desperately want to replace: leg warmers! The Farmer’s Nest has a super-cute, super-easy, fashion-forward tutorial to take the sleeves of your sweater to add flair to your boots. With the weather ahead, you might be able to use these now for your rain boots! And, as a bonus, she has a quick how-to on using the rest of the sweater to make a throw pillow cover.

Mittens Here’s a favorite for LTD — because we’re in Chicago, our winters are brutal and there are never enough mittens or gloves to keep up with the cold weather. The Renegade Seamstress gives stitch-by-stitch instructions on making super-snug mittens out of that favorite sweater you don’t want to let go of… but have to give up. Armed with this pattern, you will never run out of mittens!

sweater-bagShoulder Bag Get ready to start crossing off people on your Christmas list now! With an old sweater, you can make a stylish shoulder bag that costs little to nothing to make with an old sweater. Sweet Grace takes you through the steps to create a one-of-a-kind bag that so awesome you’ll want to keep it for yourself, but it’s a secret you’ll want to share. The trick to what makes this idea so fashionable is that it’s felted. That means, if you want to make this exact bag, the sweater you use has to be made of 100% wool (this one is alpaca wool).

sweater-heartsSweethearts Of course your upcycled sweaters don’t necessarily have to be wearable. Jess from If Only They Would Nap made her old sweaters into adorable felted hearts. She hangs them from a branch, but there are other ways you can use them: wedding shower or party favors, stocking or Easter basket stuffers, bunting for Valentine’s Day, or everyday decor.

sweater-slippersSlippers Here’s another idea to get started on for next winter: slippers! Kat at We Can Re-Do It put together an easy, step-by-step tutorial magically transform a striped sweater into adorable striped slippers. Comfy and cozy for cold nights — these will come in handy especially if next winter is anything like this winter or last winter!

Upcycling sweaters is just one of the things we’re thinking about here at LTD! Keep checking back on our blog and the website for more products and ideas to get your home projects started.

10 Things to Brighten Your February

As Punxsutawney Phil informed us, there will be six more weeks of winter. But we don’t need a groundhog to tell us that — in most parts of the country right now, we can see outside our winter that we are in the depths of winter. When it’s this cold and snowy, it’s hard to believe we’ll ever see sunshine again. But we can take action to brighten our winter days. Here are 10 things to brighten your February.

2. It’s the only place the snow won’t get to him. Cats love enclosed spaces — it’s because they spend most of the day sleeping and, in the wild, it’s a way to shield themselves from predators. But, surely there’s a more comfortable way to stay protected than a tiny waste basket!

2. You ask for attention from baby goats…. you get attention! They’re certainly lively! They’re the reason we get our morning pep — coffee was discovered when goat herders noticed the goats had a lot of energy after munching on coffee beans.

10. Have you ever seen so much joy from being sprayed with water? This isn’t too much of a surprise — raccoons love water. They almost never build their homes more than 1200 feet from a water source.

We’re counting down the days until we can have that much fun in water — but we have a few months. Until then, we have plenty of indoor time to plan our summer fun… and entertain our precious pets!
